President Ilham Aliyev and First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva attended the opening of the first phase of Jahangirbayli village in Azerbaijan’s Zangilan district on November 6. The president said around 700 families are returning to Jahangirbayli and to Soltanli village in Jabrayil district.
The first phase of reconstruction work in Jahangirbayli village, located in Azerbaijan’s Zangilan district, has been completed. The village was occupied by Armenian armed forces in 1993; before the occupation it had a school, kindergarten, cultural centre and communications office, with residents mainly engaged in silkworm breeding, grain farming, viticulture and livestock herding.
The Azerbaijani Army liberated the village from occupation on October 21, 2020. A groundbreaking ceremony for construction work there was held in May 2023 with the participation of the president.
The village covers a total area of 179.5 hectares, of which 62.57 hectares have now been put into use. The completed section includes 242 individual houses, a school building, an 80-capacity kindergarten, a two-storey administrative building, a market complex and a multifunctional building. The houses range from two to five rooms and all are connected to water, gas and electricity, equipped with solar panels and high-speed internet, while roads within the village have been asphalted.
Social infrastructure and Flag Square
The multifunctional building will house a medical centre, a pharmacy, a grocery store, a tailor’s workshop and a beauty salon. Next to the administrative building stands a square with a 10.4-metre flagpole, surrounded by a children’s playground, a sports area and a recreational park.
The 264-capacity secondary school has 13 classrooms, two laboratories for chemistry and physics, dedicated rooms for music, computer science, military training and art, a library, a 160-seat assembly hall, an indoor sports hall and a canteen, along with two outdoor sports grounds. Minister of Science and Education Emin Amrullayev briefed the president on conditions at the school.
Meeting with resettled families
Following the event, Ilham Aliyev and Mehriban Aliyeva met with families who have moved to Jahangirbayli and Soltanli villages. The president said around 700 families are returning to the two villages, where new homes have been built for them.
He noted that roughly 100,000 people have returned to Karabakh and East Zangazur over six years. The president paid tribute to the memory of fallen soldiers, saying their deaths had been avenged on the battlefield. At the end of the meeting, he handed over keys to the new homes to residents.
