Azea Group head placed under house arrest over $889,000 fraud claim

Baku’s Yasamal District Court has placed Elsavar Aliyev, head of homebuilding and renovation company Azea Group LLC, under house arrest on fraud charges. Judges cited his health condition as the reason for the measure.

Elsavar Aliyev, head of Azea Group, will now be held under house arrest rather than in pretrial detention, the Yasamal District Court ruled. He was earlier detained by officers from the Interior Ministry’s Water Transport Police Department and handed over to investigators. He faces fraud charges under relevant articles of the Criminal Code.

According to evidence gathered during the investigation, Aliyev and his wife took 889,000 manats from a citizen, supposedly for the construction of a country house. Investigators say the couple spent more than half of that sum on personal needs.

At a hearing, the Yasamal District Court took Aliyev’s health problems into account and opted for house arrest instead of detention.

It has emerged that Aliyev had previously been investigated over the same matter. The Baku City Prosecutor’s Office had earlier ordered the case materials to be examined by the Water Transport Police Department.
