Baku’s Golden Street hotel shut down over fire safety violations

Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Emergency Situations has halted operations at the Golden Street hotel in Baku’s Yasamal district after inspectors found serious fire safety violations.

According to the ministry’s press service, the State Fire Supervision Service inspected the hotel at 7 Tabriz Khalilbayli Street in Baku’s Yasamal district and uncovered numerous breaches of fire safety rules. The Golden Street hotel’s operations were suspended as a result.

Inspectors found that the hotel’s electrical wiring had not been installed to required standards, with cables running over flammable materials and no preventive maintenance carried out on the equipment. The automatic fire alarm system was also incomplete, and the existing unit had not been serviced by a licensed company.

In the kitchen, a gas-powered boiler had been installed in violation of the rules. The carpeting on the floors lacked documentation certifying fire resistance. Fire extinguishers had outdated contents and were not mounted at the required height.

Inspectors also found no evacuation plan for guests, no “Exit” signage, evacuation routes that did not meet standards, and no water reservoir for firefighting. The ministry noted that the hotel’s operation had not been agreed in advance with the State Fire Supervision Service.

The Ministry of Emergency Situations said that if the situation were allowed to continue, a fire could break out at any time and spread rapidly, leading to serious consequences. Citing the gross violations uncovered, officials decided to suspend the Golden Street hotel’s activities, and a copy of the decision was handed to the hotel’s representative.
