Azerbaijan plans to merge some colleges into universities, close others

Anar Isgandarov, who chairs the Milli Majlis Committee on Science and Education, says Azerbaijan plans to merge some colleges into universities that match their specialization, while shutting down others.

Anar Isgandarov told the websites Azedu.az and Modern.az that authorities are working to bring colleges under the umbrella of higher education institutions that match their specific fields. He said this approach is already being partly applied, citing the Pedagogical College, which operates as part of the Azerbaijan State Pedagogical University.

As another example, Isgandarov said the Medical College could be placed under the Medical University. He added that officials are also discussing folding the Social and Agrarian-Technological College, which operates alongside Lankaran State University, into the Agrarian University.

Isgandarov stressed that changes in higher education also matter for ensuring young Azerbaijanis do not face obstacles when studying or working abroad. He said the goal is for education obtained in Azerbaijan not to create extra barriers for young people in other countries. “There are thousands of young Azerbaijanis all over the world. We will take this into account,” he said.
