Former ADSEA department head goes on trial over 3 million manat embezzlement charge

Sadai Aliyev, a former department head at the Azerbaijan State Agency for Water Resources, has gone on trial at the Baku Court on Grave Crimes over charges of embezzling 3 million manats on an especially large scale.

The preliminary hearing, presided over by Judge Sabuhi Huseynov, confirmed the defendant’s personal details. The prosecutor asked the court to replace Sadai Aliyev’s current restriction measure — police supervision — with pre-trial detention, but the court rejected the motion.

The court ruled to proceed to the main trial. The next hearing has been scheduled for November 11.

Sadai Aliyev is charged under Article 179.4 of the Criminal Code, which covers embezzlement committed on an especially large scale. Prosecutors allege the sum involved amounts to 3 million manats. His conduct as a department head at the Azerbaijan State Agency for Water Resources (ADSEA) was investigated by the Main Department for Combating Corruption under the Prosecutor General’s Office.

During the investigation, police supervision was chosen as his pre-trial restriction measure. In the criminal case, the “Water Supply of Large Cities” Closed Joint-Stock Company, a subsidiary of ADSEA, has been recognized as the aggrieved party.
