Azerbaijan imported 88 tonnes of seed barley from Russia in January-July, worth $36,300, down 5.2 times from the same period last year, the State Statistics Committee reported.
According to the State Statistics Committee, Azerbaijan brought in 462 tonnes of seed barley from Russia in January-July 2025, worth $190,000. Compared with that period, this year’s seed barley imports fell roughly 5.2-fold in both volume and value. In absolute terms, the volume dropped by 374 tonnes and the value by $153,900.
Prices, however, held steady: a tonne of Russian seed barley cost an average of 700 manats this year, unchanged from the same period last year.
Push toward certified seed
Azerbaijan is also planning changes to the rules governing seed use in agriculture. Starting from the 2026-2027 planting season, farmers who do not use certified seed will see their subsidies cut by 50%. The measure is expected to boost demand for quality, certified grain seed on the market.
