Austria’s ambassador to Azerbaijan, Ettienn Berchtold, said Austrian companies could make a significant contribution to cooperation with Baku in transport, energy and technology. He made the remarks at a reception in Baku marking Austria’s National Day.
According to the ambassador, expanding transport links between the two countries, including through the Middle Corridor, is one of the key areas for future cooperation. Ettienn Berchtold noted that while energy remains an important part of the partnership between the European Union and Azerbaijan, it is not the only direction, and ties should be deepened in other sectors as well.
“Energy is one of the cornerstones of the EU-Azerbaijan partnership, but it is not the only direction,” the diplomat said, stressing the importance of strengthening cooperation between Austria and Azerbaijan more broadly.
The ambassador recalled that Austria began purchasing Azerbaijani gas this year, describing the supplies as a significant contribution to the energy security of both Austria and Europe.
Berchtold also thanked Azerbaijan for supporting Austria’s candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the 2027-2028 term. “We are very grateful to Azerbaijan for supporting our candidacy,” the ambassador said.
He went on to express gratitude for Azerbaijan’s humanitarian assistance and for its support to Ukraine.
