Azerbaijan earned $116.5 million from hazelnut exports in the first nine months of this year, even as the volume shipped abroad fell. The country sold 11,250 tons of wild hazelnuts over the period, the State Customs Committee reported.
According to figures released by the State Customs Committee, hazelnut export volumes fell by 2,200 tons, or 16%, in January-September compared with the same period last year. Despite the drop in volume, revenue from the crop rose by $16.1 million, a 16% increase. Wild hazelnut sales accounted for just 0.4% of the country’s total export earnings during the period.
Azerbaijan’s overall trade turnover with other countries reached $37.211 billion in the nine months, up 5.2% from the same period a year earlier.
Of that total, $23.865 billion came from exports and $13.346 billion from imports. Compared with the corresponding period last year, exports grew by 28.3% while imports fell by 20.4%.
As a result, Azerbaijan posted a foreign trade surplus of $10.519 billion, 5.7 times larger than the surplus recorded in the same period last year.
