A 20km section of the Zenica North–Golubinja motorway in Bosnia and Herzegovina, part of the European Vc transport corridor, has opened. It was built by a consortium of Azerbaijan’s Azvirt LLC and local firm Hering.
Azerbaijan’s road construction company Azvirt LLC has completed another infrastructure project in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The firm took part in building the 5.3km Vranduk–Ponirak section, considered one of the most technically challenging parts of the route. Despite its short length, the section required two bridges, a tunnel and three major viaducts, the tallest of which reaches 112 metres. Because the road cuts through mountainous terrain with steep gradients, construction also involved building numerous tall retaining walls.
Several officials attended the opening ceremony, including Nermin Niksic, prime minister of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina; Andrijana Katic, the Federation’s minister of transport and communications; Denis Lasic, head of the country’s Public Enterprise Roads of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina; Luigi Soreca, head of the European Union delegation to Bosnia and Herzegovina; Vilayat Guliyev, Azerbaijan’s ambassador to the country; and Kamil Aliyev, chief executive officer of Azvirt. Speakers thanked the contracting parties and expressed hope that cooperation would continue.
At the end of 2024, Azvirt, working with Chinese partners, also completed construction of the Pocitelj bridge in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Built on viaducts around 100 metres high, the bridge has a total length of 945 metres. The company has also taken part in various infrastructure projects in Serbia, Ukraine and Kyrgyzstan.
Kamil Aliyev, Azvirt’s chief executive officer, said the Azerbaijani state’s support had played an important role in the company’s achievements abroad. He noted that this support had given Azerbaijani engineers and specialists the chance to showcase their skills on the international stage, adding that the company strives to justify that trust with every new project.
Azvirt’s projects in Azerbaijan
Over the past five to six years, Azvirt has also carried out a number of major construction projects within Azerbaijan. These include the runways at Fuzuli, Zangilan and Lachin international airports, the Horadiz–Jabrayil–Zangilan–Aghband and Ahmadbayli–Fuzuli–Shusha highways, and a section of the road linking Baku to the Russian border via Guba.
The company’s current agenda includes the Kalbajar–Lachin highway, the Alat Cargo Terminal, the railway line of the Zangazur corridor (TRIPP), and a project to separate the green and red lines at the “28 May” station of the Baku metro.
