An avalanche has buried a camp near Nepal’s Himlung Himal peak in the Himalayas, leaving 14 Nepali nationals unaccounted for.
According to the Kathmandu Post, those missing are local guides and support staff who were part of an expedition team. Contact with them was lost on Sunday morning.
The newspaper reported that foreign tourists were unharmed, as they had not yet reached the camp when the avalanche struck. The tourist group had been due to arrive at the site five or six days later.
Severe weather in the region is significantly hampering search and rescue efforts. Rescue helicopters are on standby at airports in Kathmandu and Pokhara, but flights have not yet been cleared to take off.
