The handover of the chairmanship of the Commission on Aquatic Bioresources of the Caspian Sea to Azerbaijan for 2027-2028 was announced at the First Aquaculture Forum. Murad Atajanov, head of Turkmenistan’s Caspian Sea Institute, said the change will take effect next year.
According to Atajanov, Turkmenistan holds the chairmanship for 2025-2026, with the commission’s tenth meeting set to take place in December. From the first day of next January, the chairmanship will pass to Azerbaijan.
Atajanov said this would give his Azerbaijani colleagues a good opportunity to advance the regional aquaculture agenda during their 2027-2028 chairmanship.
How the commission was founded
The Commission on Aquatic Bioresources of the Caspian Sea was established in 1992 by the four countries bordering the Caspian basin – Azerbaijan, Russia, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan. Iran joined the organization as a member in 2002.
