Google opens SynthID Detector tool to all users

Google has made its SynthID Detector, a tool for spotting AI-generated images, video and audio, available worldwide in English. The tool was previously limited to journalists and media professionals.

SynthID Detector is a website that lets users upload an image, video or audio file to check whether it carries a SynthID watermark. The watermark is invisible to the human eye but can be identified by the system Google built to read it. Users must sign in with an account to use the tool.

Google says the tool cannot distinguish between content that was generated by artificial intelligence and content that was merely edited with it. SynthID Detector can recognize AI content produced by Google, OpenAI, Nvidia and Kakao. Apple is also expected to add support for SynthID technology later this year.

Google stressed that the tool is not a universal AI detector and can only identify content marked with SynthID technology. Similar checks have already been built into Google Search, Gemini and the Chrome browser, giving users an alternative way to verify content without visiting a separate website.
