Iran says deal on Russian gas transit via Azerbaijan nears completion

Iran’s acting oil minister, Hamid Bovard, says Moscow and Tehran have agreed on the main terms of a deal to transit Russian gas to Iran through Azerbaijan, with only technical details left to finalize.

Hamid Bovard, Iran’s acting oil minister, said the two countries have reached consensus on the core terms of the gas transit project and are now working through a number of remaining technical details. Once those issues are resolved, he said, the agreement will be ready for signing.

Bovard added that Tehran expects gas deliveries through the pipeline crossing Azerbaijani territory to begin shortly.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said in January 2025 that gas supplies to Iran would start at an annual volume of 2 billion cubic meters, with potential to scale up to as much as 55 billion cubic meters in the future.

Elshad Nasirov, vice-president of Azerbaijan’s state oil company SOCAR, said on October 16 that the technical capacity of existing gas infrastructure and compressor stations for the project has already been assessed.

At a meeting in Turkmenistan on October 9, the leaders of Azerbaijan, Russia and Iran discussed prospects for trilateral energy cooperation.
