Azerbaijani judoka Rashid Mammadaliyev claimed bronze in the men’s -73kg category at the World Judo Championships in Baku, held at the National Gymnastics Arena.
Rashid Mammadaliyev’s run to the podium began with a first-round win over Canada’s Justin Lemire, sending him through to the round of 16. He then beat Britain’s Ethan Nairn to reach the quarterfinals.
Mammadaliyev lost his quarterfinal to France’s Dayyan Boulemtapes but fought on in the repechage round for bronze. He defeated Italy’s Leonardo Valeriani and then Brazil’s Daniel Cargnin to secure third place at the world championship.
On the opening day of the championship, which runs until October 11, Azerbaijani team member Ahmad Yusifov won gold in the -60kg category. It was the fourth world championship gold for Azerbaijani judokas in the adult category and the country’s first-ever victory in the -60kg weight class.
