Subhan Mammadov ends Azerbaijan’s 15-year wait for European boxing title

Twenty-year-old boxer Subhan Mammadov won gold in the 50-kilogram category at the European Championships in Sofia, giving Azerbaijan its first European boxing title in 15 years.

Subhan Mammadov, representing Azerbaijan at the European Boxing Championships in the Bulgarian capital Sofia, reached the final in the 50-kilogram weight class and clinched the gold medal.

The young athlete’s victory carries special weight for Azerbaijani boxing, as the country had not won a European title since its last one 15 years ago.

Azerbaijani athletes also enjoyed success at the veterans’ world judo championship in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Movlud Miralizada won the M5 category (100 kilograms), claiming his fourth world title.

Meanwhile in Baku, Azerbaijan’s national football team beat Tajikistan 1-0. Sales are also underway for combo tickets covering four home matches that Baku’s Sabah club will play at Olympic Stadium in the UEFA Champions League main phase.

In chess news, Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, the leader of Azerbaijan’s national team, is competing at the Chess Olympiad in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.

Separately, on October 3 in Baku, Turan-Tovuz will play a friendly match against Turkey’s Fenerbahce. The Republican Olympic Sports Lyceum is also set to reopen next month following renovation work.
