Azerbaijan cuts carbon emissions by 0.8 million tonnes in 2025

Azerbaijan’s greenhouse gas emissions fell to 57.72 million tonnes in 2025, according to a new climate report from the European Union’s scientific body, even as global emissions climbed to 54.15 billion tonnes.

The EDGAR (Emissions Database for Global Atmospheric Research) system, run by the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre, reported a drop in Azerbaijan’s greenhouse gas emissions in its newly published 2026 report. The country’s carbon footprint fell from 58.52 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent in 2024 to 57.72 million tonnes in 2025, a decline of roughly 0.8 million tonnes, or 1.4%.

The report also notes that Azerbaijan’s share of global emissions shrank to 0.11%. The decline came even as total global emissions rose 0.7% to reach 54.15 billion tonnes.

How Azerbaijan compares with its neighbours

According to EDGAR’s latest data, Russia’s emissions stood at 2.57 billion tonnes in 2025, or 4.75% of the global total. Iran’s emissions reached 1.12 billion tonnes (2.07%), while Turkey’s came to 610.78 million tonnes (1.13%). Azerbaijan’s 57.72 million tonnes is far below any of its neighbours’ figures.

The world’s biggest emitters

The report shows China produced the highest volume of greenhouse gas emissions in 2025, at 15.98 billion tonnes, or about 29.51% of the global total. The United States followed with 6.02 billion tonnes, or 11.11% of the global share, while India accounted for 4.51 billion tonnes, or 8.33%.
