Baku and Berlin broaden energy agenda: from gas supplies to green power

Azerbaijan’s Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov met with Germany’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Azerbaijan, Dirk Lölke. The two sides discussed the supply of Azerbaijani gas to Germany and new areas of energy cooperation.

The meeting highlighted the significance of President Ilham Aliyev’s official visit to Germany for bilateral relations. During the visit, the two countries signed in Berlin a Joint Declaration on a Strategic Agenda for Bilateral Partnership. Both sides noted that the agreements reached during the visit open new opportunities for expanding energy cooperation.

Beyond gas supplies, the talks covered Azerbaijan’s renewable energy potential, the strengthening of its power grid, and prospects for exporting green electricity to Europe via the Caspian–Black Sea–Europe Green Energy Corridor. The parties expressed mutual interest in developing cooperation across all key areas, including energy security, the energy transition, oil and gas, renewables and energy efficiency.

Through the Southern Gas Corridor, Azerbaijan already plays an important role in diversifying Europe’s energy supplies. Deeper cooperation with Germany, the EU’s largest economy, could further strengthen that position. The Green Energy Corridor, meanwhile, is seen as a cornerstone of Baku’s strategy to evolve from a hydrocarbon exporter into a supplier of renewable energy.
