Baku puppet theatre revives ‘Beauty and the Beast’ with new puppets

The Azerbaijan State Puppet Theatre has brought back “Beauty and the Beast” with a refreshed set of puppets and stage costumes. The production explores themes of love and inner beauty.

The Azerbaijan State Puppet Theatre is staging “Beauty and the Beast,” based on the classic tale by French writer Madame Leprince de Beaumont, in a renewed production featuring new puppets and costumes. The play highlights values such as love, compassion and inner beauty, showing that a person’s true worth lies not in appearance but in their heart and actions.

The new staging blends classic puppetry technique with live acting. Attention is drawn not only to the puppets’ movements but also to the performers’ gestures, facial expressions and individual style, making the scenes more emotionally engaging.

The production is directed by Anar Mammadov, with set design by artist Igbal Aliyev and music by Jahangir Zulfugarov. The theatre’s well-known actors bring the characters to life, including Elnur Abbasguliyev, Sariyya Mansurova and Aygul Agayeva, alongside Javid Telman, Rahim Rahimov, Araz Hasanli and Narmin Ahmadova.

“Beauty and the Beast” invites young audiences on a journey into the world of fairy tales while teaching them to judge people by their character and actions rather than their outward appearance.
