Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) has held talks with Vietnamese low-cost carrier Vietjet Air on launching direct flights to Baku and Azerbaijan’s regional airports. Representatives of Sovico Group and Vingroup also took part in the negotiations.
The meeting on Azerbaijan-Vietnam air links took place on October 16. Samir Rzayev, chairman of AZAL’s board, shared the news on his social media page. The talks covered establishing a direct air connection between the two countries, potential Vietjet Air flights to Baku and regional airports, and other possible areas of cooperation between the two carriers.
According to Rzayev, expanding the airline’s international flight network, attracting new carriers to Azerbaijan and diversifying its route portfolio remain among AZAL’s key development goals.
Vietjet Air is a budget airline operating in the Vietnamese market that launched its first flight in December 2011. No official statement has yet been made on which airports the carrier might fly to in Azerbaijan or on what financial terms.
Other companies at the meeting
Sovico Group, which also took part in the talks, is a Vietnamese group operating in the investment sector. Vingroup is a multi-industry holding company active in industrial technology, real estate and services, infrastructure, clean energy, as well as public and cultural projects.
What comes next
The establishment of direct air traffic between Azerbaijan and Vietnam remains at the discussion and assessment stage. Further details on the project will be disclosed once the parties reach concrete agreements.
