Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Labour and Social Protection of the Population says 91 children have now been placed with foster families, which receive monthly allowances of 355 to 650 manats depending on the child’s age.
According to figures released by the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection of the Population, 51 of the 91 children placed with foster families are girls and 40 are boys. Each placement is formalised through a contract signed between the ministry and the foster family.
The foster care model is designed for children who have lost their parents, been deprived of parental care, or been placed in institutions by their parents, giving them the chance to grow up in a family setting instead. The process is carried out under state supervision.
The size of the monthly allowance depends on the child’s age and health status. Families caring for children under six receive 355 manats, rising to 500 manats for children with disabilities.
For children aged 7 to 13, the payments are 375 manats and 600 manats respectively. For those aged 14 to 18, the standard allowance is 395 manats, increasing to 650 manats for children with limited health capabilities.
In addition, foster families receive a one-off quarterly payment of 200 manats per child to cover seasonal clothing costs.
Procedures simplified
The ministry said the rules governing the foster family model have recently been eased. The minimum period required before a child can be placed with a foster family has been cut to two weeks.
Citizens wishing to become foster parents can now also take part in the required training sessions online.
